Engaging stakeholders and their emotional drivers

Stakeholder relations can be fraught with difficulty, disagreements and dissatisfaction. How can applying the skills of emotional intelligence help?

Behaviour is often driven by emotions and that includes the behaviour of stakeholders. If you have presented an idea or proposal to them and they have rejected it, emotions will have contributed to this behaviour. If they are avoiding you, putting you under undue pressure or arguing with you, emotions will also be contributing.

You may have repeatedly tried to address the problems with reasoning and rational arguments but found that your facts, figures and logic failed to make a difference, or even made the situation worse.

By engaging your stakeholders with an understanding of their emotional drivers and needs, you may be able to turn the situation around and gain greater collaboration much faster.

Successful partnerships depend on sophisticated insights into, and management of, subtle emotional cues and behaviours. You need to be able to recognise, acknowledge and manage the emotional needs of your stakeholders sensitively and systematically.
