Leading people through the emotions of a change process

Leading people through the emotions of a change process

Emotions drive people's behavior and people's reactions to change. All change management involves people and all change involves emotions.

It is not the information that is given to people during the change process that determines their reactions, but the feelings they have in response to the information. People's emotional responses to the perceived consequences of the change are also pivotal.

Sadly, many people leading change fail at this point: they give insufficient acknowledgement or time to the emotional aspects of change. The result is that people fail to adapt to the change, or time is wasted in conflict or lost productivity.

Engage with people's emotions, manage people's emotions, understand emotions and change will be easier. If you want people to adopt change smoothly and easily you need to acknowledge, allow and manage the feelings that they have about it, whether you agree with their feelings or not.

This managing emotions of change live tele-class will cover:

  • Understanding the emotions of change - which emotions may be present, in what order and when.
  • Why it is unrealistic and unhelpful to be excited about the change as a manager or leader.
  • Why emotions can impact highly on the success of change implementation.
  • What happens to the people who are left behind after others have been made redundant.
  • How to feel comfortable with emotions that are different from your own.
  • Why dismissing people's emotions can be counter-productive and a detriment to the change process.
  • What happens when feelings go underground and why you need to keep them above the surface.
  • How to help others to move through their reactions to new announcements or imposed changes.
  • How to reduce insecurity, resentment, disinterest, anxiety, stress and fatigue caused by the changes.

Testimonials

This was the first webinar I've attended. It was easy and a really convenient way to receive training - all in the comfort of my dining room! Rachel delivered excellent content and had plenty of great practical examples. I thoroughly recommend this type of training.

Kym Godfrey. Accent West. WA.

It was great to be able to do this live tele-class, in my own space and with no travel and accommodation expenses, but still being able to interact with other participants. Rachel's presentation was short, sharp and to the point; and I was able to take away so much from it, even though we only had an hour. I would recommend Rachel's live tele-classes to anyone wanting to acquire new skills, brush-up on old ones or discover something about themselves.

Cherie Wallace, Coordinator Statutory Planning, City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia.

While listening to Rachel during the presentation there was a click in my mind that changed my perception about work and life completely and for good. Since then I've recommended her to two of the persons I deal with on a daily basis; my beloved wife and my boss, with great positive results.

David Fernandez, Manager, IBN Corporation, Tom Price, WA.

Thank you Rachel! Your tele-class was a wonderful experience. Living in the country makes it difficult to gain access to valuable information and I find the webinar technology so easy.

Donna Rayner, Project Officer, Mingenew-Irwin Group, Western Australia.
