Leaders with high emotional intelligence out perform those with lower levels of emotional intelligence. But how would you know if you were an emotionally intelligent leader? What are the characteristics of an emotionally intelligent leader?

We already have one article on six characteristics of an emotionally intelligent leader. Here are a further six characteristics.

Emotionally intelligent leaders 7: Know their emotional drivers

They understand what is driving their behaviour, thinking and reasoning. This means that they have more control over what they do and how they do it.

Emotionally intelligent leaders 8: Read others accurately

Emotionally intelligent leaders notice the signals that indicate how other people are feeling. They are accurate in their reading of others and don't read in things which aren't there, or take things personally when nothing personal was intended.

This emotional intelligence competency, dimension three on the Genos emotional intelligence model: the ability to understand others' emotions, is very important for leaders.

They use this information, for example:

  • To help them read the play when meeting with their stakeholders, employees or the board,
  • To perceive the response to their performance feedback, and
  • To know how people are reacting when they are presenting and interacting.

Being able to read others accurately means that emotionally intelligent leaders have to cope with fewer surprises and unexpected reactions.

Emotionally intelligent leaders 9: Place importance on emotions

They understand that the emotions of others are important. This enables them to communicate with people in a way that influences change, that persuades people and that motivates.

They are therefore more likely to be able to develop productive relationships and collaborative partnerships with people.

Emotionally intelligent leaders 10: Are unafraid of emotions

Emotionally intelligent leaders are not afraid of emotions. This means that they don't avoid situations because of emotions such as anger, exasperation or anxiety. In fact, they manage the whole spectrum of emotions really well and can demonstrate how to manage emotions, including anger, anxiety, intimidation and negativity.

This role modelling from the top can have a significant impact on organisational emotional intelligence.

Emotionally intelligent leaders 11: Engage others

Emotionally intelligent leaders can engage others whether employees, shareholders, suppliers, customers, stakeholders, the board, the government or the public.

Their ability to engage others means that there is less downtime in their organisations and businesses due to disengagement and conflict. This is just one of the many benefits from having high emotional intelligence and EQ.

Emotionally intelligent leaders 12: Inspire trust

When leaders display high levels of emotional intelligence they are more likely to be perceived as authentic and to be able to build trust between themselves and others.

People will know what to expect when they meet with them and know they will be treated with respect and not be subjected to bouts of irrational or unpredictable behavior. This can build trust and inspire others.

To be trusted is an essential requirement for successful leadership.
