5. The Genos emotional intelligence model summary

Written by Rachel Green. Director, The Emotional Intelligence Institute.

There are several models of emotional intelligence and EQ. The original one was developed by Peter Salovey and Jack Mayer. However, since their work originally appeared in 1990 many other assessments and models have arisen, some with a solid research base, and others lacking in any valid or reliable research.

One that is especially geared to the workplace and which uses self-report and 360 emotional intelligence assessments, in Australia, is the Genos emotional intelligence model. It has a solid research base. I studied the Genos emotional intelligence model with Ben Palmer back in 2004 and have used it with many clients, before switching to an ability-based measure the MSCEIT.

Here is a brief overview of it so you can easily understand the concepts and framework upon which it is based. There is also a video explaining it.

Want to do the MSCEIT to measure your emotional intelligence? It is the gold-standard ability mesaure. To find out how to take the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso-Emotional-Intelligence-Test and gain feedback on the results from our Director, emotional intelligence specialist, Rachel Green, click here

The history of the Genos emotional intelligence model.

The Genos Emotional Intelligence model grew out of the SUEIT, the Swinburne University Emotional Intelligence Test.

This was developed by two key Australian researchers, Dr Ben Palmer and Professor Con Stough.

Professor Stough is the Director of Neurosciences at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia and heads up "The Brain Sciences Institute" there. He is on the faculty of The Emotional Intelligence Institute too. Professor Con Stough is the leading emotional intelligence researcher in Australia into emotional intelligence in children.

Dr Ben Palmer was one of his PhD students who extensively researched emotional intelligence in adults, in the mid 1990s.

Dr Palmer went on to develop the Genos emotional intelligence model, and it was officially launched in 2002. Its key focus is on emotional intelligence in the workplace. The model defines emotional Intelligence as follows:

"Emotional intelligence is the skill with which you perceive, express, reason with and manage your own and others' emotions."

The dimensions of the Genos emotional intelligence model.

The Genos emotional intelligence model differentiates seven dimensions or competencies of emotional intelligence:

  1. Emotional self-awareness.
  2. Emotional expression.
  3. Emotional awareness of others.
  4. Emotional reasoning.
  5. Emotional self-management.
  6. Emotional management of others.
  7. Emotional self-control.
